Movie Review: Children of Men

If you haven't seen this movie, what is WRONG with you?!

Okay, seriously, this is a really good movie. We went to see it because it's mom's birthday and her pick, but it's a good movie. Really. I'm going to try and stay away from any spoilers.

The beginning of the movie starts out with audio news clippings, setting you up so you know the premise of the story. The year is 2027 and there hasn't been a child born in 18 years. Suddenly, for no known reason, women have become infertile. The world has caved in on itself and the last "civil" country is England. The borders are tightly controlled and illegal immigrants are not tolerated. Period. They have a very extreme black and white image of borders. There are the (as in every apocalyptic movie) freedom fighters, who are fighting for the rights of immigrants. The youngest man in the world is a little over 18 years old, and a major celebrity.

If I go much further than that, I'll be in spoiler territory.

If you like movies like Blade Runner (not saying it's as good as that if you're a huge fan) you'll like this. It's the perfect blend of politics, sci fi, and good ol' fashioned humanity.

It's dark, it's scary, it's a very frightening look at the "could be" future. It's vulgar in language, and there's definitely blood. The first "gasp" moment in the movie lets you know right off the bat, there's not much hope in the world anymore, and strikes a very real nerve that exists in today's world.

The ending however, feels lacking, yet I found it appropriate for the genre and overall mood the movie was done in. Not saying it was what I wanted, but that it was probably best for it to have ended the way it did.

I happened to find this movie full of hope, rather than despair. Although I'm also a glass half full person, so I'm probably in the minority on that opinion. There were many similarities to me of the stories in the Bible, probably unintentional, but obvious to me.

I thought it was a truly human story, my mother on the other hand thought certain scenes made the movie unbelievable, that that's not how people would act in such and such situation. Being a writer though I'm quirky and weird and thought it rocked lol

Anyway, if you're original opinion somewhat matched mine, go see it. You won't be disappointed.

Lily,

Like you, I loved this film, and ESPECIALLY Michael Caine playing the aging hippy. It's a terrific film.

Oh I so want to see this movie! I need an grown-up or nearly grown-up to attend with me though as Caleb wouldn't appreciate it like you, lol. Instead, we saw "Night at the Musuem" tonight. Good one, too. ;) De
